Termites, Carpenter Ants or Wood Beetles? Choosing the Right Inspection
Wood damage has more than one cause
Termites, carpenter ants, carpenter bees and some beetles can affect wood in different ways. Moisture and decay can also damage building materials. A hole, dust or a dark stain is not enough to choose a treatment. Describe where the evidence appears and save clear photographs or a safely collected insect sample.
Termites and carpenter ants differ
Termites feed on cellulose-containing material; carpenter ants excavate nesting spaces rather than consuming wood in the same way. Both may need investigation beyond the place where a homeowner first notices an insect. If ants appear around damp framing, separate the insect-control question from the cause and repair of the moisture damage.
Round exterior holes can raise a bee question
Large bees and round openings in exterior timber can prompt a carpenter-bee assessment. Record the affected surface and its height from a safe position. Pest treatment, sealing and replacement wood should be coordinated. Do not climb to inspect eaves or assume every bee hovering near a house is a wood-nesting species.
Small holes and powder need interpretation
Wood-boring beetle evidence varies by insect and timber. Old holes may remain after activity has ended, and material introduced during a renovation can have a different history from the building’s original framing. Ask whether fresh debris and the condition of the wood support current activity. Furniture, flooring and structural timber may require different specialist scopes.
One agreement may not cover every wood pest
Read the target pests in the actual contract. A termite agreement does not automatically include ants, bees, beetles or decay repair. Ask which service is available, how identification will be documented and whether structural assessment or carpentry is separate. This keeps a termite enquiry focused while allowing a different insect problem to reach the appropriate assessment.
